Situated in Zurich behind the Main Railway Station is a colossal neo-gothic edifice built in 1889, and housing the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, this Zurich museum has a vast collection of objects and displays, with items that date from the present back to the stone age. There is an emphasis on military history and thousands of toy soldiers depict scenes from famous battles. A mural in the Hall of Arms, by Ferdinand Hodler, portrays the devastating defeat by the French in 1515 that brought Zurich to its knees.
