In 1988 the renovated hospital, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, in Madrid was converted to the national museum. Today the Reina Sofia's collection of 20th century art fills the second and fourth floors with permanent exhibits of the most important works of Spain's avant-garde and contemporary artists. The centerpiece of the Reina Sofia's permanent collection is Picasso's masterpiece Guernica, which hangs in international controversy as the artist had stipulated that it should only be returned to Spain once democracy had been restored and then only displayed in the Prado.
